In nature plants need sunlight. Sunlight is absorbed by plants and used in photosynthesis. Sunlight is the energy that powers the photosynthesis process Photosynthesis is the process of converting carbon dioxide into an organic compound. In artificial nonnatural environments, lighting is also very important. An aeroponic system needs light to grow your plants.

You have many options for lighting your aeroponic indoor garden. Typically indoor gardeners have used HID lighting for sustaining their crops. The advantage of this type of lighting is it is high in lumen production. The downfalls have cost, can be costly. They produce lots of heat. They are energy hogs by using lots of electricity. These lights come in different wattages from 250 watts – 1000 watts. They also come in metal halide (MH) or high-pressure sodium (hps). The other types of lighting are natural using windows and natural lighting. CFL is another form of lighting that can be used. The newest technology on the block for lighting is LED. The LED light-emitting diodes are low in wattage and are designed to omit colors in the light spectrum essential to plant growth. The blue light spectrum is essential to the vegetative stage of a plant. The reddish-orange spectrum is essential for the flowering stage of a plant.

How To Light An Aeroponic System

An aeroponic grower must understand natural light cycles and plant growth cycles. Plants have two main growth cycles, the vegetative stage, and the flowering stage. During the different stages the plant requires a different amount of light. Most aeroponic gardeners use a light cycle of 18 hours of light and 6 hours of dark during the vegetative stage. The cycle for the flowering stage is usually 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark. This can be obtained by using a timer. These are typical lighting schedules and each individual can experiment with different light cycles to obtain optimal results.

Aeroponic Growing – How Many Lights Do I Need?

It is important to determine how much light you will need for your growing area. A typical HID light should cover an area 4 feet by 4 feet. Some factors change this, the height at which light is placed widens coverage area but lowers the number of lumens delivered. It is also possible to use reflective material like mylar on walls around the aeroponic grow. Flat white paint is also very reflective. Tinfoil is not very reflective and absorbs light, do not use this.

Other Lighting Consideration For An Aeroponic Grow

Is your lighting producing excessive heat, if it is you will need to cool the area with ventilation? Is your lighting system a cost-effective solution? A 1000 watt HID lighting kit is going to cost a lot to operate. Are you using correct lighting for the plant life cycle? For an example of HID and LED different lights required in vegetative and flowering stages. With HID a metal halide is better for the vegetative stage and an HPS bulb is better for the flowering stage. In an LED lighting system, you want a blue spectrum for the vegetative stage and an orange-red spectrum for the flowering stage. Happy growing from aeroponic how to.
